"I went to Kenya as an observer with a Rotary Mobile Clinic. I had 35mm. cameras, what are now antique video cameras, and my memory. My job was to document the clinic. That was in 1990. In 1996 I looked back and began a series of drawings of the Maasai in retrospect. The first two were tentative and filmy. The following ones were strong and vibrant. The last two show reverence. These are the images that touched my soul.
"The brilliant colors of their everyday life and the way the Maasai carry themselves instilled awe in me. The Maasai drawings are exaggerated to convey the grace and dignity of the people. The intense colors bathe the pictures in the sun of Kenya. The vivid palette reflects the nobility of the culture, and their pride and patience is depicted with an elegant, gentle distortion.
I still see the lines of people, tall, elegant, quiet and tranquil people standing with patience, waiting to see a doctor or dentist or eye doctor. What stands out most in my mind are the colors and patterns and patience of the sometimes hundreds of people waiting and waiting. I hope to present those images next."
