Drawing Seminar will teach you to draw using pencil, colored watercolor pencils, and chalks.

Drawing Seminar Introduction

"Teaching to me is sharing all the things I have discovered. Drawing simply takes looking at things with your eyes from a different perspective. Maybe that means a perspective within your soul, but acquiring the skills to express that on paper or canvas is essential. I can explain it to you."
— Carolyn Costa

Carolyn has taught privately and in elementary and high schools for 35 years. She has had hundreds of students from ages 7 to 70. She has taught adults to draw who never believed they could learn. She has had many young students go on to study at prestigious art schools and a remarkable few move up in their chosen art professions to the top. She has a special ability to convey the skills and points of observation that are necessary to create an artist out of anyone. Teaching is another form of art to Carolyn. She feels that sharing what she knows is an obligation and a passion that comes with her gift.

Light in the Shadow of Mount Shasta
— 3 Day Drawing Seminar

Spend 3 days with intensive instruction in a small and intimate group exploring light. Concentrate on learning to draw in both a casual studio environment and outdoors with nature modeling. All materials will be provided for you. Class size will vary from 6 to 12 students. Enjoy sharing a special lunch each day and discussing individual progress. On the last night, bid farewell to your new friends over an elegant dinner.

Day 1:

We will meet in the morning at 9am and begin drawing light and shadow studies. I have a creative and whimsical selection of props for us to choose from for our exploration. Lunch will be served at noon and then we'll go on to an afternoon of discovering the color Gray. This first day we will work with pencils and the final drawing will be a Gray Scale photographic study with Mount Shasta as the subject and whatever else you choose to interject. The day will be an experience of light, shadow and originality.

Day 2:

In the morning we will introduce colors to our pencils with a variety of different types of colored pencils, watercolor pencils and chalks. The subject matter will be the topic of our creative discussion. After a lunch at noon, we will venture out to find a picturesque spot to settle down and draw the colors and the shadows and the light we see. We will return to the studio for conversation and an aperitif event.

Day 3:

The morning of the third day will begin with a discussion of the pictures each of us wants to do that day and the styles of drawing each of us wants to pursue. There will be a way for everyone to branch out and to reach that personal expression of individuality. Lunch will be less organized with no set time and served in a brown bag in order to accommodate our personal timetables of creation. We will gather in the late afternoon to share the art from the day's adventure.

In the evening of the third day at 7 pm we will gather for an evening of friendship and the sharing of our experiences during the seminar. I promise a dinner prepared and served artfully and my hope is to hear that each of you will be leaving filled with inspiration from an art filled experience and the richness of new friends.
